Countries in North America

There are 23 sovereign states in North America, a continent that includes the landmasses of Canada, the United States, and Mexico, along with the seven nations of Central America and 13 island nations in the Caribbean. This count excludes numerous dependent territories like Puerto Rico, Bermuda, and Greenland.

Canada is the largest country in North America, covering approximately 9.98 million km² (3.85 million sq mi). It is the second-largest country in the world by total area, stretching from the Atlantic Ocean in the east to the Pacific Ocean in the west and northward into the Arctic Ocean.

The United States of America is the most populous nation in North America, with a population of approximately 345 million people. Recent data indicates that the United States accounts for more than half of the continent's total population and remains the third most populous country in the world.

Geographically, Greenland is part of the North American continent, but it is not a sovereign country. It is an autonomous territory of the Kingdom of Denmark. While it is the largest island in the world, it has a small population of approximately 56,000 people living in Arctic conditions.

Saint Kitts and Nevis is the smallest sovereign country in North America by both land area and population. It covers just 261 km² (101 sq mi) and has approximately 48,000 residents. The nation consists of two volcanic islands located in the Leeward Islands chain of the Caribbean.

Central America consists of seven sovereign countries: Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Panama. This narrow land bridge connects North America to South America and is bordered by the Pacific Ocean to the west and the Caribbean Sea to the east, featuring a volcanic landscape.
