What is GDP per Capita?

GDP per capita is an economic metric that measures the average economic output produced per person within a country. It is calculated by dividing the total Gross Domestic Product of a nation by its total midyear population. This figure serves as a primary indicator of a country's standard of living and relative economic health.

Methodology

The World Bank calculates this figure by taking the sum of gross value added by all resident producers plus any product taxes and minus any subsidies not included in the value of the products. This total GDP, converted into current US dollars using official exchange rates, is then divided by the total population estimated at the middle of the calendar year.

GDP per capita is a measure of a country's economic output that accounts for its total population. It is derived by dividing the Gross Domestic Product by the midyear population. According to the latest available data, this metric provides a simplified snapshot of individual prosperity and the relative economic performance of 212 countries and territories worldwide.

Monaco holds the ranking for the highest GDP per capita globally, with current estimates showing approximately $288,001 per person. This exceptionally high figure is driven by the country's small population and its status as a major financial hub. It reflects a high concentration of wealth and a service-oriented economy within the Mediterranean principality.

Burundi currently records the lowest GDP per capita in the world, with the latest figures placing it at approximately $219 per person. This low value indicates significant economic challenges, often linked to a high reliance on agriculture and limited industrial development.
