What is Population Ages 0-14?

Population ages 0-14 is the share of a country's residents who are children, expressed as a percentage of the total population. It is a core demographic indicator for understanding age structure, dependency pressure, school-age demand, and future labor force growth.

Methodology

The World Bank reports this indicator using national population estimates and demographic models. The number of residents aged 0 through 14 is divided by the total population and multiplied by 100. The result allows countries with very different population sizes to be compared on the same percentage basis.

Population ages 0-14 measures the percentage of a country's total population made up of children from birth through age 14. It is used to compare how young or old national populations are and to estimate demand for schools, pediatric healthcare, and future labor-market entry.

Countries with the highest population ages 0-14 shares are generally considered the youngest by age structure. These countries often have higher fertility rates and faster population growth. WorldStats ranks them using the latest available World Bank age-structure data for each country.

The child population share is calculated by dividing the number of residents aged 0 to 14 by the total population, then multiplying by 100. Because it is a percentage, it can compare small and large countries without being dominated by total population size.

A high 0-14 share means children make up a large part of the population. This can create pressure on schools and health systems in the short term, while also pointing to a larger future workforce if education, employment, and public services can keep pace.
