Richest Countries in the World 2026
Countries ranked by GDP per capita — a measure of economic output per person. Data from the World Bank.
GDP per capita divides a country's total economic output by its population, providing a per-person measure of economic prosperity. While it does not capture income inequality or purchasing power differences, it remains the most widely used benchmark for comparing national wealth across countries.

Methodology
World BankThis ranking uses GDP per capita in current US dollars from the World Bank's World Development Indicators. Countries are ranked by their most recent available data point. GDP per capita is calculated as gross domestic product divided by midyear population.
Primary indicator: GDP per Capita
Frequently Asked Questions
Not always. GDP per capita divides total economic output by population, but the headline number can be inflated by foreign-owned multinationals (Ireland, Luxembourg), oil revenue (Norway, Qatar), or financial centers. It does not reflect income inequality or what a wage actually buys locally, which is why a country can rank high on GDP per capita without its residents feeling proportionally rich.
Microstates often dominate GDP per capita rankings because their populations are small relative to economic activity. Monaco hosts a major banking and tourism sector serving non-residents, Liechtenstein concentrates financial services, and Luxembourg headquarters multinationals. The denominator (population) is tiny, so the per-capita figure looks very large compared with typical OECD economies.
GDP per capita is the most widely used wealth metric, but it overstates living standards in countries with unequal income or large foreign-owned production. For a closer view of what employees actually keep, see the Highest After-Tax Earnings ranking (modeled net pay) or the Highest Earning Countries ranking (gross monthly wages). Each captures a different facet of national prosperity.
Coverage depends on World Bank's available GDP per Capita data. Some countries may not report this indicator every year, so WorldStats ranks each country using its latest comparable observation.
